Parenting Place's vision is that every parent in Aotearoa feels confident and every child more deeply loved

  • We inspire parents by offering hope for families
  • We equip parents with information and strategies
  • We journey with parents through key transition times

As an organisation, our goal is to be the #1 trusted voice on parenting in Aotearoa and curators of the best, most relevant parenting information, delivering it in ways that are accessible, practical, and filled with hope.

Our online courses have been developed to reflect these values. Like other Parenting Place resources, our online courses cultivate practical expertise, drawing from best practice and the latest international evidence to underpin both our content and the way in which it is delivered.

Our online courses sit within a family of resources that include parenting talks, face-to-face courses, access to parent coaches, social media offerings and a rich repository of articles that all deliver empowering and hopeful content, in ways that address specific situations and requirements.

Who is our audience?

Our courses hope to meet the needs of a broad and diverse range of families in Aotearoa. They are accessible to those who may not have access to centres where courses are run or prefer the convenience and flexibility of learning at their own pace and in their own environment.

Online self-guided courses are intended for

  • Parents who are keen to learn strategies and skills to support their children
  • Caregivers involved in a child's life such as grandparents, teachers, baby-sitters, family friends and extended family members
  • Professionals who work with children such as educators, youth or social workers and; doctors.

Our self-guided courses are not intended for

  • Children and teenagers who are in the care of an adult
  • Diagnosing any medical situations or providing personalised professional advice
  • Propagation or promotion of other external content or programmes not developed by Parenting Place.

Intended learning outcomes

Our online self-guided courses intend to help parents, caregivers and  educators in the following way:

  • Empathy and calm – Help parents and caregivers stay grounded in the presence of a child's overwhelming feelings, understanding their triggers and being able to sit with their children and offer their calm.
  • Curiosity and support – Help parents and caregivers to notice the specifics and context of their child's behaviour, emotions and physical symptoms at different ages and stages, to be attentive to signs of distress and provide a 'safe-container' for their children. Parents will get insights on how their support and reassurance can help their child cope with thoughts, feelings and facing fears in a scaffolded way.
  • Learning and research – Give parents and caregivers some information on the 'hows' and 'whys' of their child's feelings and triggers providing them with  effective strategies to support them. Courses will also point them in the direction of further help if needed.
  • Collaboration with professionals – Give participants the opportunity to hear from professionals such as paediatricians, psychologists, and parent coaches to assist with developing strategies and treatment plans that work within their own family contexts.
  • Advocacy – Parents and caregivers often need to act as advocates for their child's mental health needs. These courses can help with language and skills to communicate with teachers, school administrators and other caregivers to ensure that appropriate accommodations and support are in place to create a conducive environment for their child's well-being.
  • Patience and resilience – Parenting can be challenging and often requires both patience and resilience. These courses help parents to understand that while progress may take time and; setbacks may occur, that there are very manageable things they can do that will make a real difference and encourage them to remain committed to supporting their child.
